The nighttime silence in an undertaker’s back room is broken by a few knocks. The clerk Berlach rises from his coffin, but his awakening is riddled with questions. Berlach is—or at least was—dead, as the bullet’s entry and exit wounds suggest. He remembers firing the shot himself, pointing the gun at his head: he knows he killed himself, but not why. He then wanders aimlessly through a desolate city. From a bar patron to an encounter with a prostitute—an encounter that deepens his obsession with understanding—Berlach arrives at dawn outside the monumental office building, where he will find all the answers he seeks.
